The oldest parts of St Winifrid’s church, the nave where most of the pews are and the chancel housing the choir stalls and altar are believed to date from the 12th century. The church was built from local magnesium limestone and has walls that are 0.85m thick. In the 14th century, the building was extended by the addition of an extra section on the south side known as a chantry chapel increasing significantly the number of worshippers who could attend. Then in the 15th century, the tower was added at the west end of the building. The three-pane stained glass window above the altar dates from 1861.
